Literature And Teaching Ministries (LATM)
On Friday, September 16th, beloved professor and scholar Jack Cottrell went to his reward in glory. It was my privilege over the past two years leading LATM to have been welcomed into his home on several occasions. One of those times, as we said farewell, he said these words, “If you ever wonder whether you can translate any of my books into another language, the answer is always YES!” His heart not only for the Word of God but that God’s word would get out into the nations was passionate, sincere and infectious. While he will be certainly missed, I can’t think of a better way to remember him but to continue his legacy of communicating the faith once for all to all who are waiting to hear it and willing to believe it. Please take a few minutes out of your day right now and watch this video of Jack expressing the passion of his life (It was filmed in March 2021, but only finished on the day he departed and went to be with the Lord).

This update on my condition is very difficult to write. Basically, my cancer has been determined to be incurable. My oncologist has assigned me to chemotherapy for six months (warning me that it may have bad side effects). This chemo is designated “palliative” rather than “curative,” i.e.: “care given to improve the quality of life” (hmmm). This will make it difficult for me to assure our church that I will be able to meet my teaching responsibilities each Sunday; thus this morning at church (First Church of Christ, Greendale, IN) I announced my retirement from the position of (part-time) teaching minister. Tonight I will teach my final regular lesson for FCC, and perhaps for my 65-year ministry. I thank God for His mercies, and I thank all of you for your care and prayers.

As most of you may have heard by now, on June 9, when the surgeons opened me up to remove my colon, they found that the cancerous condition within my abdomen would not allow them to proceed. Thus they simply closed me up. I now am at home, recovering from the exploratory surgery, but with no hope of freedom from the cancer. I have an appointment with my oncologist next Wednesday, June 15, to see what palliative steps might be available.
I cannot adequately express how much I appreciate all the prayers that have been offered up on my behalf. It seems, though, that God has chosen not to answer these prayers as most of us had hoped. I am not somehow disappointed with God, though, for many reasons. For one thing, I have lived a long life (over 84 years), and have been able (by God’s grace) to do many things that are helping Christ’s Kingdom grow.
For another thing, as I understand the Biblical world view, I do not believe that we should expect God to answer all our prayers about healing our bodies and extending our lives here in this fallen universe. Some erroneously believe that Christ’s death on the cross was intended not just to give our spirits new life in a new universe and in a new body, but also to heal all the physical diseases that attack our present bodies. (See, for example, what is called the “health and wealth gospel” today.) No, we live in a fallen universe (see Genesis 3), in bodies that are under the inescapable curse of death. Thus we must be ready someday to say “Goodbye!” to these bodies, and to wait with Jesus in the angelic heaven for the time when He will give us new, glorified bodies that are forever free from that curse.
Thus when we are facing death in this fallen world, it is OK to pray for healing and extension of life (plan A), but to remember that if God chooses not to answer these prayers, He has a PLAN A+ waiting for us, which is Romans 8:18 — “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” Thus we are “waiting eagerly for . . . the redemption of our bodies” (v. 23). Hallelujah!

As mentioned in my last report, I had a meeting with my oncologist on June 15 (yesterday), at which he summed up what he and my surgeon had concluded after my aborted surgery on June 9. The report is that my cancer has spread throughout the abdominal area, to the point that nothing more can be done about it. He estimated that I have a few months to live before I enter the A+ period of my existence.
I want to thank the hundreds of you who reacted to, commented on, and shared my previous report. I apologize for not being able to respond to all of them.
I have had this present cancer for about a year, and I have not experienced any serious pain from it. I consider this to be the way God has answered all your prayers for me. If you continue to pray for me, let it be that God will continue to spare me from serious pain. THANKS SO MUCH!

Thank you much, Brother, for these kind words. I am not in pain, and am able to move (slowly) about the house for basic purposes. I am very short on energy, but very strong in faith! Romans 8:18. JC
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

I hope that this website of Jack’s is kept active. It’s a terrific resource. Does anyone know what the plan is?
Mark,
This is the back end support, Steve, I plan on keeping this site up as long as I can.
Jack Cottrell was a giant of the faith and someone who continues to shape me through his teachings. While I’m disappointed I only started reading his work this year, I know that I will continue to revisit his writing throughout my life. Thank you for everything, Jack!
Oh! The horses and chariots of biblically driven theologians! May you students pick up your mantle and pass on your love for God’s Word to the next generation.
Sorry to hear of your loss. I learned much from Jack’s writing. Blessings to your family
