What Is the Salvation Status of the Unevangelized? — 2 Comments

  1. Jack: The “heathen” who have never heard of Jesus will be judged according to their “conscientious response to available light,” that is, responding to God as Creator, vis His general revelation. If I have heard you correctly in the past, your view is that no one will qualify for this option because no response can be sufficiently conscientious to obtain forgiveness. It appears that this popular phrase’s only value, then, is in identifying how God will evaluate those who have not heard, but in all cases it will be to no avail. The “unfairness,” if there is any, is that those who have access to scripture and respond to it rightly, can be saved. However, all those who are absent the scripture but respond to the available light of general revelation, have no hope of salvation. My apologies if I have misrepresented your view here.

    • Allan, thanks for the comment. Actually, my view is that EVERYONE will be judged by this principle. The main watershed is between those who know only some form of God’s law, e.g., via general revelation; and those who also have access to the basic light of the gospel of God, via some form of special revelation. No one in the former category will be saved, because the only light they have is the law, and all have sinned against that law–therefore no one in this category passes the CRAL test. The only way the principle of CRAL can be applied is to the light of the gospel. Regarding those who have access to the gospel, God knows how much they have been able to know and understand it, and how conscientious they have been in responding to it. This is the only situation where the principle can make a difference. And, only God the omniscient one can truly apply the principle.
