WAS IT POSSIBLE FOR JESUS TO SIN? — 4 Comments

  1. I do not believe Jesus sinned. If he had a thought of sinning then that in itself would be a sin. Jesus said if you looked upon a woman to desire her you had committed sin already….so if Jesus had this thought (as many humans do) then he would have sinned….if he did not have this thought then he was not tempted ‘in all points’ like as we are. Ergo, Jesus could not and did not sin! He was the perfect sacrifice for sinners.

  2. I believe Jesus COULD have sinned, but DIDN’T! That’s the whole point that the NT makes (especially the Book of Hebrews). If He didn’t have the ability to sin, then His temptation was a farce! (Actually a joke. And the joke is on us, because we can and do sin and we need help!). There can be no genuine temptation where there is no possibility of sin. If you pay attention to ethical (or I should say moral) field (or dimension) we live in, have you noticed there are no CANs or CANNOTs, but rather WILLs and WON’Ts. And that’s what Jesus chose to do, He chose the WON’T. And because His temptations were genuine, consequently, He can sympathize with us in our dire need, as our High Priest (check the Book of Hebrews, chapters 4 and 5). Hope this helped.

  3. I believe Jesus led a sinless life, and I have read a number of arguments for both sides of the question: “Could Jesus Have Sinned?” I lean toward the idea that Jesus had the capability to sin and that temptation means he thought about (weighed) the choices put before him.

The question I cannot resolve is this: If Jesus was incapable of ever sinning, would not the Devil have known that, and so why bother? It is clear Satan knew who Jesus was. Help me understand this more clearly.

    • Thank you for your comment. I am not dogmatic about this issue. Some of my most respected colleagues disagree with me on it. The point you raise about the devil is not relevant, though, because Satan is not omniscient and does not understand the ways of God very clearly. We cannot assume he would know, one way or the other, whether Jesus could or could not sin. Compare this with 1 Corinthians 2:8, which says that if “the rulers of this age” (which I take to include Satan and his demons) had understood the purpose of the cross, “they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.”
