THE PARADOX OF PRAYER — 2 Comments

  1. Hello Dr. Cottrell!

    Good sermon, thanks for sharing.

One question I have: you state that “God cannot answer those prayers (for their salvation) against your own free will.” What exactly does praying for another’s salvation accomplish? What should one expect for God to do with prayers for the lost?

    • We expect God to intervene in their circumstances via his special providence in order to INFLUENCE them to make the needed changes in their minds and hearts. (On special providence, see my book, “God Most High: What the Bible Says About God” [College Press, 2012]). The lost person will always be able to RESIST this influence, however. God does not unilaterally change the unbeliever’s heart, contrary to Calvinist views.
