SHOULD I BE REBAPTIZED OR NOT?

Jack Cottrell Posted on August 21, 2018 by Jack CottrellAugust 21, 2018

SHOULD I BE REBAPTIZED OR NOT? By Jack Cottrell There are so many views about baptism that it is easy to understand how someone could be confused as to whether or not their own baptism was or is valid. If you are a conscientious person who sincerely wants to follow Biblical teaching as closely as possible, then you want to be sure that you have been baptized according to the Bible’s teaching about it. This is especially true since the Bible does say that baptism has something to do with one’s salvation. Let’s say you are a person with a … Continue reading →

“THE BODY OF SIN” (ROMANS 6:6) — PART ONE

Jack Cottrell Posted on April 20, 2017 by Jack CottrellApril 20, 2017

QUESTION. What does Paul mean by the phrase “body of sin” in Romans 6:6? Is he referring to the physical body? And if so, in what sense is it a body “of sin”? ANSWER. You have raised a question of crucial importance for our understanding of human nature as such, and especially for our understanding of the nature of salvation. In my answer I will draw from the entire section of Romans that includes chapters six through eight. When I wrote my commentary on Romans for College Press (2 volumes, 1996 & 1998; one volume condensed, 2005), I was surprised … Continue reading →

MUST ONE BELIEVE JESUS IS GOD IN ORDER TO BE SAVED?

Jack Cottrell Posted on March 30, 2017 by Jack CottrellMarch 30, 2017

QUESTION: Does true saving faith in Jesus Christ necessarily include believing that he is God in the flesh? Must one believe that Jesus is God in order to be saved? Can one deny his deity and still be saved? ANSWER: True saving faith is indeed faith in Jesus Christ. When the Philippian jailer asked of Paul and Silas, “’Sirs, what must I do to be saved?’ They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved’” (Acts 16:30-31, NASB). Jesus himself had already made this clear: “’Whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life…. He … Continue reading →

IS JESUS GOD?

Jack Cottrell Posted on March 30, 2017 by Jack CottrellMarch 30, 2017

QUESTION: Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus is God? ANSWER: Let’s be clear about what we mean by saying “Jesus is God.” This does not mean that Jesus of Nazareth and God are the exact same being. The eternal, infinite divine being who is the one true and living God has existed forever as the three persons of the Trinity. We know them as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (see Matt. 28:19). The eternal God the Son, also known as the Logos (John 1:1), at a specific time in history entered … Continue reading →

DID GOD RIG THE ELECTION? By Jack Cottrell

Jack Cottrell Posted on November 29, 2016 by Jack CottrellNovember 29, 2016

Someone on Facebook recently asked me the question, “What do you say to those who read Daniel 2:21 and say we did not have a choice in the [presidential] election?” Daniel 2:21 says that God “changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings.” So, asked the inquirer, does this means that “God will raise up whomever he wants,” and that “now God has spoken and has decided to choose Donald Trump”? This sounds “almost as if God has rigged the election.” In answering this, let’s begin by asking a more general question: Why does anything happen the … Continue reading →

THE DOCTRINAL FOUNDATIONS OF CBS

Jack Cottrell Posted on September 30, 2016 by Jack CottrellSeptember 30, 2016

THE DOCTRINAL FOUNDATIONS OF CBS (CBC&S; CCU) — JACK COTTRELL, 1993 [While cleaning out my office and files after being recently “retired” from my professorship at CCU, I came across the following. It is a presentation I gave at a gathering of the faculty and students at “the school on the hill” 23 years ago, in August of 1993. (I don’t remember the nature of the gathering.) I thought it might be of some interest now in September 2016, in view of what has taken place “on the hill” within the past year.] My missionary friend Greg Waddell reports that … Continue reading →

CHRISTIAN TRUTH FOR A WORLD IN DECAY

Jack Cottrell Posted on August 24, 2016 by Jack CottrellAugust 24, 2016

CHRISTIAN TRUTH FOR A WORLD IN DECAY Jack Cottrell – August 2016 Sometimes we greet one another with this question: “How are things with you?” “Things?” What kind of “things”? Usually we mean, “How’s your health? How’s your family? How’s your job? What’s new in your life?” But what if we broadened the scope of the question, e.g., “In general, do you think things in the nation are headed in the right direction, or have they gotten off on the wrong track?” Here we would be asking you to give an opinion about “what’s happening” regarding such things as the … Continue reading →

HAVE WE LEARNED TO THINK IN GRACE?

Jack Cottrell Posted on June 4, 2016 by Jack CottrellJune 4, 2016

HAVE WE LEARNED TO THINK IN GRACE? AN AID FOR SELF-EXAMINATION Jack Cottrell – June 2016 In Romans 6:14-15, Paul says we Christians are “not under law, but under grace.” I.e., we are not under the law system as a way of salvation; we are under the grace system. We know that we are still obligated to obey God’s law commands, but we realize that we are not saved by achieving a certain level of obedience to those commands. Rather, we are saved by the grace of God, through our sincere trust in the redemptive works of Christ. As believers … Continue reading →

THE NEW PERSPECTIVE ON PAUL: WRIGHT IS WRONG

Jack Cottrell Posted on June 3, 2016 by Jack CottrellJune 3, 2016

THE NEW PERSPECTIVE ON PAUL: WRIGHT IS WRONG JACK COTTRELL — 2ND EDITION – JUNE 2016 I begin with this caveat: I am not an expert on this subject. I am pursuing it because it is one of the most significant CHALLENGES to traditional theology, and because it is being taught by one of the most respected and influential Biblical scholars of our day: Nicholas Thomas (N.T., Tom) Wright, who is sometimes credited with coining the expression,“New Perspective on Paul” [NPP] (Justification, 28). [Most quotes here are from Wright’s Justification: God’s Plan and Paul’s Vision (IVP 2009). Some are from … Continue reading →

IS BAPTISM THE FIRST STEP OF OBEDIENCE?

Jack Cottrell Posted on May 28, 2016 by Jack CottrellJune 2, 2016

IS BAPTISM THE FIRST STEP OF OBEDIENCE? (This is the second edition of an article by Jack Cottrell, first published in Christian Standard in April 10, 2005.) A church leader was recently asked to explain his convictions and practice concerning baptism. He replied, “I have always believed that when a person sincerely comes to trust Jesus Christ as leader, forgiver, and Savior, and repents, the first step of obedience is to be baptized into Christ. That is what I have always taught, believed, and practiced” (Christian Standard, 6/27/04, p. 6). What does it mean to think of baptism as “the … Continue reading →
