“YAHWEH IS HIS NAME” — Exodus 15:3

Jack Cottrell Posted on January 16, 2018 by Jack CottrellJanuary 16, 2018

“YAHWEH IS HIS NAME” – Exodus 15:3 A sermon by Jack Cottrell – CRA Bible Conference – Kissimmee FL – January 2018 INTRODUCTION. A. In most Old Testament translations, when you see God referred to as “the LORD” (with LORD all capitals), in the original Hebrew this is actually the divine name YAHWEH (which used to be pronounced “Jehovah”). What does “Yahweh” mean? (It does NOT mean “Lord.”) B. Where can we go to find the meaning of Yahweh? We find it in EXODUS 3:1-18. [READ] C. But then a puzzling statement appears in Exod. 6:2-3 – “God spoke further … Continue reading →

THE HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN CHRIST’S SUFFERING

Jack Cottrell Posted on December 2, 2017 by Jack CottrellDecember 2, 2017

THE HOLY SPIRIT’S ROLE IN CHRIST’S SUFFERING A Communion Meditation by Jack Cottrell In my previous meditation I pointed out that Jesus the SON of God was not the only one suffering at the cross. God the FATHER was also suffering, but in a different way. Jesus as the Son of God was the one who was actually suffering the infinite wrath of God in our place, making our salvation possible. But it was God the Father who, with feelings of deepest agony, was responsible for pouring out that wrath upon his own Son (Rom. 8:32). But here we shall … Continue reading →

“THE BODY OF SIN” (ROMANS 6:6) — PART THREE

Jack Cottrell Posted on April 20, 2017 by Jack CottrellApril 20, 2017

[Continued from Part Two] [QUESTION. What does Paul mean by the phrase “body of sin” in Romans 6:6? Is he referring to the physical body? And if so, in what sense is it a body “of sin”?] ANSWER. In Romans six the Apostle Paul presents us with some very good news about what happened to us when we were baptized into Christ. In that moment, he says, our sin-corrupted souls died with Christ and were raised up to walk in new spiritual life. One great benefit of this is that our physical bodies, which in this life are under the … Continue reading →

“THE BODY OF SIN” (ROMANS 6:6) — PART TWO

Jack Cottrell Posted on April 20, 2017 by Jack CottrellApril 20, 2017

[Continued from Part One] [QUESTION. What does Paul mean by the phrase “body of sin” in Romans 6:6? Is he referring to the physical body? And if so, in what sense is it a body “of sin”?] ANSWER. As we saw in the previous part of this essay, because of the effects of sin upon the two parts of our human nature, and because of the singular focus of regeneration at the time of conversion, the Christian is a combination of a redeemed soul and an as-yet-unredeemed body. As a result, the Christian life is an on-going conflict between the … Continue reading →

“THE BODY OF SIN” (ROMANS 6:6) — PART ONE

Jack Cottrell Posted on April 20, 2017 by Jack CottrellApril 20, 2017

QUESTION. What does Paul mean by the phrase “body of sin” in Romans 6:6? Is he referring to the physical body? And if so, in what sense is it a body “of sin”? ANSWER. You have raised a question of crucial importance for our understanding of human nature as such, and especially for our understanding of the nature of salvation. In my answer I will draw from the entire section of Romans that includes chapters six through eight. When I wrote my commentary on Romans for College Press (2 volumes, 1996 & 1998; one volume condensed, 2005), I was surprised … Continue reading →

THE MESSAGE OF ROMANS 1-8

Jack Cottrell Posted on May 26, 2016 by Jack CottrellMay 26, 2016

THE MESSAGE OF ROMANS 1-8 A DEVOTIONAL GIVEN BY JACK COTTRELL AT THE MAY 2016 MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE CHRISTIAN RESTORATION ASSOCIATION I. INTRODUCTION. How can we discern what Paul is teaching in Romans 1-8, or what any other Biblical text means, for that matter? The issue is not just hermeneutics. Rather, to a great extent it depends on how we answer this question: who is the primary AUTHOR of the Bible? This is a watershed issue—in Christendom, in Evangelicalism, in the Restoration Movement, and in many colleges and seminaries. Christian orthodoxy usually agrees that Scripture … Continue reading →

Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God?

Jack Cottrell Posted on December 25, 2015 by Jack CottrellDecember 25, 2015

DO MUSLIMS & CHRISTIANS WORSHIP THE SAME GOD? JACK COTTRELL (composed NOVEMBER 14, 2015) Islam is the world’s second largest religion, with around two billion adherents. This is nearly one-fourth of the world’s population. Fifty countries are mostly Muslim. Europe has around 50 million Muslims, and the USA around 7 million. These numbers are increasing rapidly. But isn’t that a good thing? Aren’t Muslims a religious people, and isn’t Islam similar to Christianity? Don’t we both trace our faith back to the Old Testament, to Abraham? Don’t Christians and Muslims worship the same God? In 2007 George W. Bush said, … Continue reading →

Saved by Grace #3 — DOUBLE CURSE, DOUBLE CURE

Jack Cottrell Posted on October 9, 2015 by Jack CottrellNovember 13, 2015

The English word “grace” can be used in three ways. First, it can refer to the cause of salvation: it represents the aspect of God’s nature that causes him to love sinners and seek their salvation even though they do not deserve it. Second, “grace” can refer to the way of salvation: we are saved by the grace system (via the grace gate), as contrasted with the impotent law system (via the law gate). The third way we use the word “grace” is this: it refers to the content of salvation, which we receive as a gift in the moment … Continue reading →

JESUS AND YAHWEH: HOW ARE THEY RELATED?

Jack Cottrell Posted on January 23, 2015 by Jack CottrellNovember 29, 2016

Question: Recently I saw an article that declared that Yahweh (Jehovah) in the Old Testament is God the Father only, and that he does not include the other persons of the Trinity. The article specifically said that Yahweh and Christ Jesus are two distinct individuals. Is this Biblical? What do you think? Answer: I saw the same article, and I disagree with the view presented there. I believe that Yahweh as the name for God revealed in the Old Testament includes all three persons of the Trinity. Depending on the context, this name may refer to all three persons or … Continue reading →

David and the Holy Spirit in Psalm 51:11

Jack Cottrell Posted on January 27, 2014 by Jack CottrellJanuary 27, 2014

QUESTION: How did King David receive the Holy Spirit? ANSWER: This question is probably suggested by Psalm 51:11, where David as king prays to God, “Do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.” This indicates that when he is saying this prayer, he does have the Holy Spirit in some way. How did he receive the Spirit in the first place? We must understand that in the Bible people can “have the Holy Spirit” in two very different ways. On the one hand, we may speak of the EQUIPPING presence of the Holy Spirit. This means that some people have … Continue reading →
