The Righteousness of God in the Gospel

Jack Cottrell Posted on January 23, 2014 by Jack CottrellJanuary 23, 2014

QUESTION: In Romans 1:16-17 Paul says that the righteousness of God is revealed in the Gospel. The word “gospel” means “good news.” In what sense can the righteousness of God be good news for sinners? ANSWER: That God is righteous means that he must always be true to himself; he must always be true to every aspect of his nature. This is his consistency of character. It means that he must be true BOTH to his holy nature (his perfect moral purity) AND to his loving nature. In reference to the former, “righteousness” includes seeing that the requirements of his … Continue reading →

THE SPRINKLED BLOOD: A COMMUNION MEDITATION

THE SPRINKLED BLOOD: A COMMUNION MEDITATION by Jack Cottrell (Notes) on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 2:35pm THE SPRINKLED BLOOD: A Communion Meditation In the days of the Old Covenant, the Law of Moses required many kinds of animal sacrifices. In such a sacrifice, when the animal’s throat was cut, a priest collected its blood in a basin, then sprinkled the blood on various things—sometimes on the worshipers themselves! For example, regarding the special covenant-making ceremony recorded in Exodus 24, verse 8 describes part of it thus: “So Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said, … Continue reading →

Communion Meditation: THE LAMB OF GOD by Jack Cottrell (Notes) on Monday, December 24, 2012 at 11:34am JESUS: THE LAMB OF GOD A Communion Meditation for a Christmas Eve Service After Jesus’ baptism and temptation, he returned to the place where John the Baptist was preaching and baptizing. John looked at Jesus and said, “Behold, THE LAMB OF GOD, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). What does this mean, that Jesus is “the Lamb of God”? Gary Burge, in his commentary on John, says he once asked a mature Christian why Jesus is called “the Lamb … Continue reading →

ARE WE BORN SINNERS?

ARE WE BORN SINNERS? by Jack Cottrell (Notes) on Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at 7:08pm QUESTION: Are we human beings born sinners? What effect, if any, did the sin of Adam and Eve have on all their offspring? Did it affect our ability to choose whether or not to sin? ANSWER: This question is about the doctrine of original sin, which in one form or another is held by a large portion of Christendom. This doctrine says that Adam’s sin did indeed affect all of his descendants in serious ways. As early as the third century Christian writers began to … Continue reading →

WHAT ABOUT BAPTISM AS TRINE (TRIPLE) IMMERSION?

Jack Cottrell Posted on October 26, 2012 by Jack CottrellApril 30, 2013

WHAT ABOUT BAPTISM AS TRINE (TRIPLE) IMMERSION? by Jack Cottrell (Notes) on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 4:36pm QUESTION: I have heard that some churches baptize their new converts by immersing them three times. They call this “trine” (or “triune”) immersion. Where does this idea come from? ANSWER: Today practically all Orthodox Churches (e.g., Greek Orthodox) immerse both infants and adult converts three times as their form of baptism. They are simply continuing a practice that began in the early church around the beginning of the third century. Also, the Church of the Brethren practices believers’ baptism by immersing three … Continue reading →

IS BAPTISM A PART OF THE GOSPEL?

Jack Cottrell Posted on September 28, 2012 by Jack CottrellApril 30, 2013

IS BAPTISM A PART OF THE GOSPEL? by Jack Cottrell (Notes) on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 2:13pm QUESTION: I know someone who argues that baptism cannot be related to salvation because (a) salvation comes via the power of the gospel (Rom. 1:16), and (b) baptism is not part of the gospel (1 Cor. 1:17). Therefore (c) baptism has nothing to do with salvation. What do you think about this argument? ANSWER: This is a bit of a twist on the usual Zwinglian (faith-only) argument against baptism for salvation based on this Corinthians text. I have briefly discussed and refuted … Continue reading →

How Should We Vote in November?

Jack Cottrell Posted on July 23, 2012 by Jack CottrellApril 30, 2013

How Should We Vote in November? by Jack Cottrell (Notes) on Monday, July 23, 2012 at 9:35am Bob Russell recently posted a note about voting for the presidency in November. He was dealing with the fairly common idea that Christians should not vote for Romney because he is a Mormon, and Mormonism is a seriously wrong cult. Bro. Russell’s view was VERY good, and I shared his post on my page. That generated a lot of discussion, including many remarks advocating–alas–voting AGAINST Romney because he is a Mormon–the very thing Russell was arguing against. Today I decided to enter my … Continue reading →
