JOHN 6:65 AND CALVINISM — 21 Comments

  1. Thanks Jack: The tenets you mention are well supported in your comments and in the whole of scripture. Very much appreciated!

  2. It is always good to see something that refutes Calvinism.
It’s such a horrible man made philosophy.

  3. Thank you so much for your post. I have been struggling with the notion of Calvinism because it did not make sense, and yet, many well-known teachers that I greatly respect are Calvinists. I have been praying about my confusion to the Lord and this morning he gave John 15:15-17 to me. I looked up commentaries and found your post, which to me makes perfect sense. So, thank you again!

  4. Hi Mr Cottrell,

I was so excited when I came across this article, as it confirmed what I had recently stumbled on in my personal reading (which was the link between 6:44 and 45).The ALL factor etc as you have explained.

But when I got to vs 64_65 it became a little hazy, as it almost read in my mind that God had not drawn them unto Jesus so that was the reason why they didn’t believe. Now this baffled me as I wondered how that could be if in verse 45 God had said that they shall be ALL thought of Him.

SO I googled the verse, and came across your article!.

NOW after reading your article. Can verse 65 be summarised in this way?

…the reason you cant come unto me is… “BECAUSE THE ‘GIVEN’ OF THE FATHER IS RESERVED FOR THE BELIEVER.
….(The BELIEVER being the ones as per vs 45 who heard(HEEDED) and LEARNT.

    Thank you
    Clare

  5. This was a very good teaching from scripture. Thankyou for this. I know that the cross of Jesus was what opened the way for mankind to be saved. And this really brought that out. When I be lifted up, I will draw ALL. It was real. Calvinism stresses God’s choosing someone as the way, but it really was Christ’s sacrifice! He opened the way to all.

  6. thanks for your clear interpretation of scripture..I am not a scholar but do my best with my Calvinist friends….my main argument lies in my belief that Calvinism does not reflect the nature and character of God as revealed in scripture and his interaction with us…ty

  7. Dear Jack,
Thank you for refuting how the Calvinist see salvation in John 6;44.Could you also refute the Calvinist view of Ephesians 1;1-6?

    • I have done this briefly in my book, What the Bible Says About God the Ruler, pp. 306-309. The main point is that in Ephesians 1 Paul is not talking about individuals, but about the Jews as a group and the Gentiles as a group. How Christ includes the Gentiles within God’s purposes is one of the main points of Ephesians. As evidence for this, see how in chapter 1 Paul distinguishes between first person plural, referring to the Jews, and second person plural, referring to the Gentiles. The earlier verses refer especially to the Jews, then in v. 12ff. we see the switch from first to second person. “We who were the first to hope in Christ” are the Jews (v. 12), and “you also” in v. 13 are the Gentiles. Paul continues to develop this theme in the letter, especially in chs. 2 & 3.

  8. Great posts Jack. I’ve read through several of your articles, and will continue to reference your site. I’m looking forward to reading other articles.

  9. You say in the last paragraph that Gods will is for no believer to lose his faith, but the fact is some will. How do you link this to 1 John 2:19,20. Did they ever actually have faith if they were never truly of us?

    • What John says in this text is not meant to apply to ALL who “go out from us.” Some who “go out from us” indeed were never true believers in the first place, but we cannot take this text as stating the ONLY explanation for why this happens. Here he is talking about those of the “antichrist” spirit who will characterize the time of the loosing of Satan near the end.

  10. Excellent stuff. Yes, calvinists are part of the mission field, as most of them are completely lost without knowing it. The calvinist “god” and Satan are hard to tell apart, and that is scary. I know many calvinists who are so lovely but who have been so indoctrinated by their false teachers and blogs, and other propaganda. I’ll continue to pray for them.

  11. GREAT AND HELPFUL POST…PRAYING FOR THE CALVINIST TO BE ENLIGHTENED AND BE SAVED..

  13. Mr. Cottrell, thanks a lot for your explaining.

Would you permit me translate your answer to my language (Brazilian Portuguese) and reproduce it into my personal blog?

    Thank you.

    • Permission has been granted, and the Portuguese version is now online! Thank you, Erlan Tostes!

  14. Thanks for the clear presentation on the tough subject. My son, Charles, stopped by last week on his way back to Boise from New York. He had visited a college in upper NY with an evaluation team.
