Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? — 27 Comments

  1. Dr. Cottrell, I use a three wick candle to illustration/explain the Trinity. Just as the three wicks share one undivided candle nature, so the Father, Word (who became the Son via the incarnation) and Holy Spirit share one undivided God nature. [Note: While their are many three wick candles, there is only one undivided God, who eternally exist as the Father, Word, and Holy Spirit.]

What are your thoughts on this explanation?

    • Most illustrations I have seen are flawed in some way. I have never heard of this one, Terry. My first impression is that I like it, at least for the ontological Trinity.

  2. Thank you again Dr. Cottrell for providing a strong, biblical, and understandable lesson. You stated that your purpose in this essay had a limited scope (In this essay I cannot go into all the problems of the Muslim religion, nor into all the reasons why it is so dangerous to Christianity and the world.) Would you consider expanding in another essay or two in order to address these areas also? I know that it would be extremely helpful in addressing the swell of acceptance and tolerance of Islam. I hope you will consider it.

  3. Dr. Cottrell what a clear exposition on the subject and so very helpful. Thank you for this. We live and work amongst Muslims in India and this will certainly be of value to me when in contact with them.

    • Thank you so much, Brother Leonard, for these kind words! May God bless your Kingdom ministry!

  4. What an inspiring and clarifying distinction you make for us between the One True God we serve and the false god of Islam. I especially appreciate the added meaning you give to our baptism as a point of reference for when we made our stand with the Lord God who loves us.

  5. Dr. Cottrell, thank-you for your clear and concise explanation of the difference between the true God and the false god. I did two master’s degree programs, one in religion and one in criminal justice. I wrote papers in both programs on Islam. I found out that Islam not only hates Christianity, but they hate the world as a whole. They do not respect Christianity, nor any other religion or people. Islam is not a religion of peace and will not be satisfied until the whole world is under its domination.

  6. Jack, thanks for your paper. There is only one faith according to the N.T. Jude says it was “once delivered.” I jus returned from Beechmont Toyota getting an oil change. I bought the first 2006 Prius on the last day of 2005. Beechmont would think it rather strange if I walked over to the new car sales showroom and said, “Where is my new Prius?”

Checking their records they would have said, “Here’s your signature where you took possession on the last day of 2005. You got the car keys that day. We deliver cars only once.”

It doesn’t matter who says God delivered a different message to Joe Smith or a Muslim. When John put his pen down after getting direct revelation. That was it. Thanks for you essay.

  7. mr jack, thank you for this great simple deep teaching! i will share this with others, of course giving you and the Word full credit. thanks again….

  8. Thank you Dr. Cottrell for you insights to this relevant topic. I also owe you a heartfelt thank you for your books “The Faith Once for All” and “Power from on High” which I use in teaching adult Bible class for the past many years. Until I found these books teaching was very hard as so many of the commentaries drifted into Biblical questionable areas. I love your clarity of thought and simplifying the complex – it is a breath of fresh air. My class appreciates this solid doctrine – supported by the other relevant views presented. God Bless, John

  9. For me, it has all been as simple as John 3:16. Can you imagine any Muslim professing that “Allah so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This verse is definitive about salvation, about Jesus, and about God….the Muslims’ Allah can’t hold a candle to this verse.

  10. Thanks, Jack, for this brief yet profound essay. From my discussions about this matter, I believe many Christians have moved in the direction of “Allah equals Jehovah” because they believe this conclusion exempts them from exposing false doctrine. Is it OK to share this article with others?

  11. Thanks for the clarity you provide. I wish you would also discuss how Jews who reject Jesus also fit into this living portrait of our God and His children on earth.

    • There are many similarities; the reasoning pattern would be the same. The main difference between Jews and Muslims in this regard would be their starting points.

  12. Amen Jack (all three-in-one of you). What a blessing to see complex truths made simple and all truths made clear. It is your gift and I thank God for it – and for you! Hopefully multitudes more will see the incredible danger of this cult. Blessings my brother for a faithful and fruitful new year!

  13. Professor Cottrell. Thank you for this definitive piece. In addition to the issue you so well address, there are also the legal, cultural, and political aspects of Islam, many parts of which are demonic.

    • I very much agree. My focus was very limited. Other aspects of basic Muslim beliefs are also very relevant to the future of the church and of the world.

  14. I’ve had some remarkable discussions with many Muslins because of this question. It has offered me some great opportunities to share not just doctrine but the Gospel as well. I prefer to find those willing to discuss these issues rather than fight. Thank you for adding some extra material and your wisdom.

  15. Dr. Jack

Very well stated. I just wish that everyone could read this. You have stated my stand far better than I can/

  16. Looks like we can give labels to your three portraits at the top: Jacques, flanked on the left by Jackie and on the right by Jack. Thanks, Jack, for this thorough and clear explanation. I’m sharing it with my network.

  17. Truth spoken (written) here. Be very careful of the “clothing” worn by those around you. Thank you for breaking this down so clearly. Blessings to you and keep writing

  18. Well spoken. What an opportunity to reach these folks. They are sincere, generally, but this does not negate the fact they are under a delusion. Robert Spencer ( Jihadwatch.org) has articulated well the Islamic position, and virtually says something similar. True Islamic interpretation is closer to what the fanatics believe then what most of Islam may be willing to admit.
The reality of the incarnation is at once a beautiful and powerful concept, and most certainly where we differentiate Christian belief from every other religion, not just Islam. And especially with regards to the crucifixion of Jesus, when the Man who is the Son of God submits to a brutal death and rises again. This we are constantly made aware of and appreciative (Phil 2) and the Islamic world in general is continuously confounded and totally confused by. May God help us reach them with the true message of Love and Grace!
