Are Exorcisms Miraculous? — 4 Comments

  1. I am curious as to why you adhere to the cessationist viewpoint. Up to reading that i have agreed with everything that I’ve read in your other entries. Is there something that you’ve written on the subject that I can read? Finally do you believe that all of the spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit have ceased?

    • Thanks for asking! My belief in cessationism is based on Biblical exegesis, beginning with the purpose of miracles and gifts of supernatural knowledge as such, beginning in the Old Testament. I follow the interpretation of Scripture that says three things usually occur in a connected cluster: redemptive acts of God, explanatory revelation from God, and God-enabled miraculous works (i.e., “signs”) to confirm the revelation. (Compare Heb. 2:3-4.) The main purpose of miracles is to give evidence of the divine origin of revelation claims. The final and climactic cluster of redemptive acts of God were connected with the works of Jesus, ending with the sending of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Temporary gifts of the Spirit involving explanatory revelation and evidential powers were given throughout the apostolic era, and this is all recorded and documented in Scriptural writings. These writings are now all that we need to preach and believe the gospel (John 20:30-31). The Holy Spirit still gives non-revelatory and non-miraculous spiritual gifts, but the revelatory and miraculous gifts have ceased. I have discussed this subject in detail in my books on the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit: A Biblical Study (pb., 131pp.), and Power from on High: What the Bible Says About the Holy Spirit (hb., 506pp.). These books include a detailed study of 1 Corinthians 13:8-13. I also recommend John MacArthur’s books on this subject: Charismatic Chaos, and Strange Fire.

  2. Mr. Cottrell,

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Allow me to introduce myself briefly, my name is Thomas and I am a third-year Bible college student, within our brotherhood. For several years I have done extensive research on the topic of demonization and the practice of counseling and casting out demons, ever since I was personally healed from demonic oppression. My research has led me to even investigate mental illness and to track down Grayson Ensign’s grandson for more information. I have read Grayson Ensign’s work and a few others on this topic.

I say this to ask, is there any other authors, books, resources or people you know of that may be of use to me in my research? You had stated above that you teach a seminary course called “Demonology”… unfortunately, I will not have the pleasure of taking this course, however, I am very interested in what resources you may have that your willing to share.

I am somewhat discouraged as I have been to Central Christian College of the Bible, the very place that Grayson Ensign was, and no one seems to want to talk about demonology.

    Thank you in advice.
    Blessings,
    – Thomas

    • I strongly recommend the works of Neil Anderson, especially his book, The Bondage Breaker.
