WHAT HAPPENED TO OLD TESTAMENT SAINTS WHEN THEY DIED? — 3 Comments

  1. I recently encountered a preacher who used Rom. 4:11 to say that we are saved by faith before being baptized. I agree with your interpretation of Col. 2:12 and Rom. 6:3-6 etc. but your statement here seems to negate my argument that Abraham was not saved until Jesus’ blood was shed and that the remission of our sins is accomplished by the Holy Spirit applying the blood of Jesus at the time a member of the body of Christ immerses us into his death.
    Thanks for your advise.

    • I’m not sure I get the point of this comment. If you are saying that Abraham was not saved (forgiven, accepted by God) until Jesus died on the cross, then, yes, I am saying this is not true. That’s a main point of my post. This has NOTHING to do with how sinners are saved in the New Covenant era, though. Whoever uses Romans 4:11 or any other reference to the salvation of someone in the pre-New Covenant era (such as the thief on the cross) is arguing falsely. The death of Jesus established a New Covenant, and part of the New Covenant is changes in the conditions for salvation. The conditions for salvation in pre-cross times were different from the conditions today, but the forgiveness of sins is the same in all eras.

  2. Those who are confident that Jesus knew the answer to this question might well point to his story of the beggar and the rich man. What additional light is needed for believers to know the fate of those who died prior to the cross?
