HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT WORK? — 3 Comments

  1. Good evening Jack. In your book, “The Holy Spirit – A Biblical Study,” on pp 49-50, you talk about two cautions to take on incorrect views of how the Holy Spirit works on sinners’ hearts. For the second extreme, you wrote that there are those who follow the idea that the Holy Spirit works on sinners’ hearts through God’s word alone – a view often found in the Restoration Movement. My question is, which Restoration group would this be? Disciples of Christ? Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ?
And also, when you write that we should affirm the idea that the Holy Spirit’s work is universal and resistible, can you clarify what you mean by universal?
Thank you very much and God bless!

    • The idea that the Spirit works through the Word only is not associated specifically with any one wing of the Restoration Movement. It is a view taught by Alexander Campbell, i.e., that in conversion the Spirit works only through the Word. Campbell thought that this was the best way to refute Calvinism. Many others in the Restoration Movement followed and still follow Campbell on this, most of which will probably be found in the non-instrumental wing. (See chapter six in my book, Power from on High: What the Bible Says About the Holy Spirit.) It it not uniquely associated with any one of the wings, though. Second, when I say that the Spirit’s work before and in conversion is universal and resistible, I am specifically denying Calvinism, which says that the Spirit’s converting activity is LIMITED only to the elect, and that it is IRRESISTIBLE. Contrary to this, I am saying that the working of the Spirit both through the Word and through special providence is directed toward and can be felt by all sinners, but this does not automatically lead to their conversion. The reason is that all sinners have free will and are able to resist the Spirit’s efforts. E.g., In John 12:32 Jesus says that the influence of the message of the cross exerts a drawing power upon “all men,” but this does not result in the salvation of all men. Many–indeed, most–will resist this influence.

  2. Tha ks for sharing the lesson on Grace, I will translate them unto Spanish to make them available for the Hispanic people in México. God bless you.
