THE MEANING OF FOOTWASHING IN JOHN 13:1-17 — 5 Comments

  1. Greetings I am so delighted I found your web site, I really found you by error, while I was searching on Digg for something else, Anyways I am here now and would just like to say many thanks for a remarkable post and a all round interesting blog (I also love the theme/design), I don’t have time to look over it all at the moment but I have saved it and also included your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read a great deal more, Please do keep up the fantastic job.

  2. The lesson from this message is about lifting and building each other up in love. If we truly love one another as Jesus desires us to, we will be willing to go down humbly to help.

  3. I think the lesson being taught in this passage is Jesus’ remarks at the end.
13Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

As you mention humility is the needed lesson Jesus is illustrating. We Free Will Baptist practice the actual washing of one another’s feet.
I think the humility called for is that of serving one another as Jesus had repeatedly taught the Apostles.
