Did the Early Christian Fathers Teach Calvinism? — 2 Comments

  1. I concur with your analysis. I recently researched this subject and found that the quote you mentioned is from John Gill. The new translation makes it look like St Clement said the entire quote. However, when you look at a copy of the original version in Olde English, the positioning of the quotes makes it clear that John Gill is commenting on the passage in section 8, and that St Clement did not say the last two sentences.

In case you or anyone else is interested, here is the URL to the section of the original book, giving evidence that St Clement did NOT say the entire passage.

  2. Thank you for the article, as a former 3 or 4 point Calvinist I have been doing a lot of research and work on the scriptures, especially John 6, as well as discernment work on the teachings of John MacArthur and Steve Lawson. Recently I came across a video of Steve Lawson discussing his book “Pillars of Grace”. He also quoted Clement of Rome, so it was good to read your take on some of these quotes. I am planning on eventually making some of the research and discernment work available online and hopefully put into video teaching series someday. Too bad you didn’t have your notes and notations of the early writings available. I will have to look up the Lightfoot edition you mentioned. Thanks again.
