“THE BODY OF SIN” (ROMANS 6:6) — PART THREE — 8 Comments

  1. Brother Cottrell, I have read your posts on salvation and how we receive salvation, and I also have the majority of your published works, i.e. “Faith once for all”, Studies in first Peter”, Set free..”, and the Holy Spirit, etc. But, could you please give a brief synopsis on how the Holy Spirit is directly involved in the salvation process.

    • Briefly, in Christian baptism the Spirit enters the life of the sinner and infuses new spiritual life into his spirit/soul. This one-time event is called regeneration, new creation, being born again, being baptized in the Spirit, and spiritual circumcision. From that point on the Spirit continues to reside in the redeemed person’s life in order to strengthen and empower his/her now-alive spirit to obey God’s laws and thus be holy. As we submit ourselves to the Holy Spirit’s power, we grow in grace and knowledge until we physically die. This life-long process is called sanctification.

  2. Dear Jack Cottrell:
Right now I am at a seminar where we are being taught that the body is not sinful, that this is an erroroneous teaching and that sin is a living being, and if we give into its thoughts, then we become sinful, so the key to being free from sin is not listening to sinful thoughts. I am bothered by this teaching, and came to your web site tonight, asking God to give me the truth. Can you point out the dangers of this type of thinking, as it seems to assume that by thinking the right thoughts, we can become sin-free. Can you provide additional information as to why the sarx is the body? (Scriptures) I appreciate your help here.

    • It is important to understand that Paul is not saying the body is somehow inherently evil, after the pattern of philosophical dualism. Sometimes people resist the Biblical view because they cannot understand the difference between such an inherent evil condition and the effects of sin on the physical nature. I wish I could give you “additional information,” but honestly, I don’t see why you need more than what Paul is saying in Romans 6-8. If you have access to my commentary on Romans, you can find a more detailed study of the key texts, but that’s about it. Your seminar leader’s view, as you describe it, is just as bad as the “inherently evil” view, since it suggests that we can save ourselves. As far as “why the sarx is the body” is concerned, this is not the conclusion that needs a lot of proof, since that is what the term MEANS in the Greek language. We should actually be asking those who want the word sarx to mean something OTHER than the body to give us more information as to how that can be.

      • More study which I did after posting my questions has revealed that you are correct as you have explained.Thank you! I did find much confusion posted on the internet, unfortunately.

  3. Brother Cottrell, I’m sorry to be bothering you about this, but do you have a personal preference about translations of the bible?
