“THE BODY OF SIN” (ROMANS 6:6) — PART ONE — 13 Comments

  1. Thank you for this. The Breath of God has been impressing this in my inner man but I was having difficulty getting it planted in my conscious mind. This explanation has helped a lot. I continue on. God bless you.

  2. 2 questions Mr Cottrell

Do you a New Testament translation that is available?

When you write “the Holy Spirit heals the sin-corrupted spirit” is there no reason to believe the spirit is recreated at conversion?
    Brian

    • Your first question is incomplete. Regarding the second question, the saving work of the Holy Spirit has two stages. The first stage is the initial life-giving transition bestowed at conversion (in baptism, Col. 2:12-13; Titus 3:5), which is equated with resurrection from the dead, as applied to the spirit that is dead in trespasses and sins (Eph. 2;1, 5). This is also equated with new creation (2 Cor. 5:17; Eph. 2:10). This is a one-time event, usually called regeneration. As the NT describes it, though, this is only the beginning of a process of on-going healing, growing, and maturing–usually called sanctification.

  3. One more question, how do we know that sarx does not refer to the old sinful life style which Christians call the flesh?

    • Because this simply is not consistent with what Paul is saying in Romans 6-8. The basic assumption of this whole section is anthropological dualism: human beings are body and spirit. He is teaching here that the initial salvation event that happens in baptism (Romans 6:3-4) happens only to the spirit, but this gives us spiritual power to control the sinful urges of the as-yet-unredeemed body (v. 6). In this verse the “old sinful life style” is called “the old MAN [anthropos],” not the flesh. And that spiritual death–specifically of the spirit/soul–renders the BODY OF SIN powerless. Our renewed spirit is now able to take control of our still-sinful body. This salvation event (spiritual resurrection) is the basis for the command in 6:12: “THEREFORE [note the cause-effect] do not let sin reign in your MORTAL BODY [which is the same as the sarx/flesh].” In v. 13 he says–get control of “the members of your body”–again, the same as the sarx/flesh. There is more–you can trace this theme throughout these chapters. There is NOTHING here that says that sarx = the old sinful lifestyle. Christians have invented this alternative to the natural view because they are afraid the sarx=flesh view makes it say that the body is inherently evil, a la philosophical dualism. But that simply is not what Paul is saying; we can affirm that sarx=flesh and be very comfortable with it. Paul puts the cap on his message by assuring us that the sinful body WILL be redeemed, at the second coming (8:23).

      • Thank you, as your reply and also study of my own has revealed the truth about this matter.

  4. As I’ve told you many times, Dr. Cottrell, I appreciate your great and helpful thoughts, and your sharing them with us in writing in such a skillful and understandable way. I have got so much out of your classes and books. Thank you for your faith, courage, and insights.

    • While I have not had the privilege of being in Dr. Cottrell’s classes, I have read practically all of his books. As such, I would like to echo Stan Clanton’s comment from April 21, 2017. Dr. Cottrell, you have given me a Bible college education through your writings!

  5. What a fantastic exegesis! I have always been bothered by the way so many just blithely read “Sinful nature” from the pre-2011 NIV as they preached through Romans.
