PREACHING ON BAPTISM: AN EXAMPLE — 12 Comments

  1. Dr. Cottrell,

    Good day!

I wanna just ask about “Baptism”— is it right to “require something” like– do this first, do that first,(letter to God, make first a list of your Sin, etc.) before to Baptize someone even He already understood the “gospel” about Jesus….and if he failed to do He will not be baptize, where is that in the Bible??? Thank you. Your answer is Highly appreciated.

  2. Hi Jack,

Have a question on the order of salvation: is it a proper inference from this article that justification by faith and the new birth both happen simultaneously at baptism? I’m thinking of Titus 3:5-7 here which says:

“…but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life”

Thanks for a great resource in your site,

    God Bless,

    -TR

    • Yes, that is my understanding. In fact, this is what all Christendom believed for its first 1,500 years. It is confirmed in Acts 2:38, where both forgiveness of sins (=justification) and the gift of the Holy Spirit (for the purpose of regeneration/new birth, and ongoing indwelling for the purpose of sanctification) are promised to happen in baptism. • Thank you Jack. Do you have any idea as to why people like Piper, MacArthur et al have such a hard time with this? They are very determined to separate justification from baptism. Why? Every Baptist I’ve talked to about this suddenly takes on a very concerned look (twilight music running in their head) whenever I mention this…

  3. Your Cracker Barrel illustration would be rejected by the Evangelical/Calvinist heretics. They would say our eating illustration is thus: You, the subject, are a depraved, comatose being…the source is the food solution prepared by the pharmaceutical company, the means is the IV bag, needles, and other paraphenalia, and the time was not only when the nurse stuck you with the IV needle and turned on the drip…which you had no choice in… but the ‘when’ was ultimately in the mind of God who determined beforehand that you had no choice in the event; and he determined when you would become comatose and be ‘filled’…

  4. Tx you Dr. JC As always I appreciate the wisdom and insight you bring to the table. I have for years used the same principle of a check. The check (Grace given to us by God-The source) is available to all. The check must be received (Means: by faith) It must be activated(as soon as it is endorsed. It Does little good to carry around and unsigned check in your wallet.
Not original, I may have gotten it from you, or Dr. Marion Henderson, back in the day. I’m sure there are a million illustrations to bring home the point. Blessings on you and your tribe. Scott Cain-Fort Myers, Fl.

  5. I appreciate the illustrations on the relationship between faith and baptism. I just purchased you commentary on Romans 1-8 two weeks ago and have found it to be a tremendous to my studies on Romans. Thanks for your blog ministry.

  6. Praise God! for the effectual preaching of His word. Dr. Cottrell, you have blessed me over and over through your book on baptism, your Romans commentary, and your WONDERFUL reference, “The Faith Once for All”. God bless you for all your work for His kingdom and in all your opportunities for continuing service.
