What Is Forgiveness? — 8 Comments

  1. Hi Jack! Thanks for this article, but I’m struggling with reconciling some of the thoughts within and I’m wondering if you could help me clear things up in my head. I know there’s a flaw somewhere in my logic. Here’s what I’m trying to figure out:
    1. We can’t be forgiven by God unless we forgive others. (Matt. 6:15)
    2. Forgiveness can’t be accomplished unless the other person accepts it.
    3. If someone doesn’t accept our forgiveness, it means we haven’t forgiven them yet.
    4. That person’s unacceptance would cause a delay in God forgiving us?

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding Matt. 6:15 or what you are saying in the article?

    Thanks for your help!!

    • The key idea is that you have done all you can if you are WILLING to forgive and have offered that forgiveness. If the offender refuses to accept it, then it is all on that person. You have fulfilled the requirement of Matt. 6:15.

  3. Good article. Hard to put into everyday life. As Christians we have been bombarded with guilt from sermons on the 70 x7 ……unconditional forgiveness. We should be emphasizing that we must strive to have the capacity within ourselves to forgive a person countless times. BUT that person make some kind of action on his part to say , I’m sorry. Then of course, love is having to never say you are sorry……that’s somewhere in the Bible, right?
